Zaption
Many of us use short video clips in class to highlight a point or to convey information about a particular topic. Sometimes students struggle to comprehend the entire video in one viewing and we often have review questions at the end.
Zaption is a web-based program that allows teachers to use a YouTube video in order to embed questions as students are watching. Question types include: multiple choice, checkbox, open-ended, and drawing. You can also insert information slides to support the video content. For example, if there is a key term you want students to recognize, you can have a screen pop up while the video is playing to show the definition.
Students can watch the videos independently or you can use a new presentation mode. Presentation mode allows teachers to project the video and while students are logged in using a device, when the video stops, the questions pop up on the student's screen. Teachers can preview the responses in order to give immediate feedback. The responses can also be shared so students can see other responses.
This is a great tool to make videos more interactive and engaging. Students can watch them before coming to class to preview information or the video can be purposefully used in class as an interactive presentation. Many teachers are utilizing this tool on campus - so let me know if you want to see it in action.
